1978 Ford F150 Ranger XLT
A restored Ranger XLT with modern power and road manners.

The Build
This 1978 Ford F-150 Ranger XLT 4x4 is a fully restored classic Ford truck that keeps the character and presence of the original Ranger XLT while adding modern power, comfort, reliability, and drivability. It has undergone a complete restoration, with fresh paint, new chrome throughout, upgraded mechanicals, a fully redone interior, and the kind of thoughtful improvements that make it feel far more refined and usable than a stock 1978 truck.
Under the hood is a new 302 BluePrint engine with Holley EFI, producing 365 horsepower. The fuel-injected setup gives the truck strong, reliable performance while making it easier to start, drive, and enjoy in different conditions. It is paired with a new GearStar 4R70W automatic transmission controlled by a Quick 4 system, giving the truck a much more modern driving feel with better gearing and improved highway manners.
The fuel and cooling systems have also been fully upgraded. The truck has a new aluminum fuel tank with a built-in fuel pump, along with a new fuel system designed to support the Holley EFI setup. A new cooling system with dual electric fans helps keep the engine running properly, even when the truck is being used in traffic, warm weather, or slower-speed driving.
The electrical system was replaced with an all-new American Autowire wiring harness, giving the truck a clean and reliable foundation for the upgraded engine management, gauges, lighting, stereo, and comfort systems. It is the kind of update that makes a major difference in the long-term usability and dependability of a restored classic.
The drivetrain and 4x4 system were also addressed properly. The truck features a rebuilt NP205 transfer case and new driveshafts, giving confidence that the four-wheel-drive system is ready for use. The suspension and steering have been updated as well, including steering linkage, knuckles, coil springs, track bar bushing, and a four-wheel alignment. These upgrades help the truck feel tighter, safer, and more composed on the road.
Braking has been improved with new Wilwood front disc brakes, giving the truck better stopping power and control. Combined with the updated suspension, rebuilt driveline components, and modern wheel-and-tire package, the truck has a much more confident feel than a stock late-1970s F-150.
The stance is one of the standout features. The truck rides on all-new custom American Racing AR172 Baja wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires sized 35x12.50R15LT. The wheel-and-tire combination gives the truck the right classic 4x4 look — tough, purposeful, and period-correct in spirit while still feeling fresh and modern.
Inside, the truck has been completely redone with a new interior that blends classic pickup simplicity with modern comfort and convenience. It features Dakota Digital gauges, an Ididit tilt steering column, a TMI bench seat, new headliner, new door panels, new kick panels, and new sun visors. Vintage Air conditioning and heat make the truck comfortable in all seasons, while the upgraded stereo system with amplifier and custom subwoofer gives it a much better driving experience without taking away from the vintage feel.
The exterior has been refreshed with new paint, new chrome throughout, new running boards, and a new custom dual exhaust system. The overall look is clean, strong, and unmistakably classic Ford. It has the rugged presence of a Ranger XLT 4x4, but with the finish quality and upgrades that make it stand out.
Overall, this 1978 Ford F-150 Ranger XLT 4x4 is a thoughtfully restored and heavily upgraded classic truck. With its new 365-horsepower BluePrint 302, Holley EFI, GearStar 4R70W transmission, rebuilt NP205 transfer case, new driveshafts, upgraded suspension and steering, Wilwood front disc brakes, new fuel and cooling systems, American Autowire harness, Vintage Air, Dakota Digital gauges, TMI interior, custom stereo, fresh paint, new chrome, custom dual exhaust, running boards, and 35-inch BFGoodrich KO2 tires, it delivers the look of a classic Ford 4x4 with the power, comfort, and reliability to enjoy it today.
